Topsy Turvy Upside-Down Tomato Planter (Anonymous)
I live in a townhouse with a small backyard in Northern Virginia. With two dogs who use the yard it would have been almost impossible to grow a veggie garden. So, I decided to try the topsy turvy and I hung two from my north-facing deck which got direct sun for half of the day. The tomatoes grew like wild fire - they grew straight down and then curved up. It grew about a dozen large tomatoes - not a lot but good enough. The tomatoes needed to be watered very often, almost every day, in the very hot months of the summer. However, the green peppers in the other one didn't need as much water. That plant grew down just a bit and then darted up and grew many mid-sized green peppers all summer. I don't think I will try tomatoes again due to the lack of fruit and the amount of water it needed. I will definitely do peppers again. The bags are definitely heavy when filled with dirt and even heavier after watered. Squirrels got into one of them and chewed around the cover but I never noticed any bugs or insects on the plants. For me, these worked so well for me and I can't wait to use them again next year.

Yes, we purchased two this past summer and got a late start but still here in Washington State by September had red tomatos to eat and STILL blooming. We now have a green house so in October we moved both into the greenhouse and just been cutting off the old vines and ones that did get mildew but still eating. The tomatos ripen excellent onced picked and taken inside. I just put into a basket in they ripen. But when they turn more white then green and get a star on the bottoms they make for excellent fried green tomatos! Yes, I am buying more and using outside and in my greenhouse again next year. :)

"My wife and I purchased two of these planters a few months ago and our tomato plants are now jam packed with fruit ready to pick. I recently purchased two more online as our local stores were sold out. I transplanted our bell pepper plants and within a day, the leaves had perked up and within a few days the peppers are noticeably bigger.

As others have stated, the planters get heavy and a little awkward to work with when placing the plant and filling with dirt. In most situations, you'll need two people to get it set up. But once it is up and hanging, nothing could be easier.

We are already looking forward to getting our plants in early next spring."

I have better boy tomatoes in my topsy turvy. I so far have 13 tomatoes (they aren't ready yet so i don't know how well they taste). My father grew up on a farm and took one look at my tomato plant and said it is the biggest he's ever seen. The only issue is that I keep having to raise it. It is touching the ground again and My arms wont be able to reach to raise it again. I am 5'2 and it is taller than me. My 3 tomatoes that are almost ripe are HUGE. There is a trick to the potting soil. Go get some cow manure and lay it in the bottom about an inch or so. And then put the potting soil over that. It helped alot. I am really tempted to go buy another because my red pepper plant that is on the ground is not doing so well

Whether there isn’t enough space at the apartment for a garden plot, or whether you’re just tired of bending over to cultivate tomatoes, the upside-down tomato planter makes it easy to water, feed, trim and harvest without bending or kneeling. Thanks to this whole new direction in growing tomatoes, crops are bigger, better tasting, healthier, and easier to grow than ever before. And, since the crop is upside down and will never touch the ground, staking, caging, bacteria, ground rotting, fungus and small animals are no longer a problem. The perfect gift for any gardener and great for those who live in apartments or who have small backyards, the planter lets you water and fertilize through the built-in top funnel, and trim and harvest at comfortable chest height! It’s also great for growing cucumbers, peppers, and flowers. Best of all, setting up is easy. Just add soil and plants, then fertilize. Hang it from a hook on a deck or balcony and you’re you’ll be adding color and juicy tomatoes to salads, sandwiches, soups and more in no time.

This is my first year using the Topsy Turvy. I bought eleven of them. I gave one to my mother for Mother's Day. I bought her the potting soil, a tomato plant, and the Topsy Turvy. Sort of a unique gift. I planted cucumbers and tomatoes. All my friends at work bought some. Everyone has two and a few of us have more. It takes the work out of gardening. I love it!! Great idea!

Topsy Turvy Tomato Planter - I've used the upside-down planters for five years. First: follow the directions. The round sponges are to be spaced inside your soil to help keep it moist. Second: the planters will be heavy if you use soil, but they will not hold as much water if you use perlite, styrofoam peanuts, etc. It's a trade-off. Easier to handle means more watering. When fruiting, the plants need a lot of water: they're tomatoes.
After some experimentation, we've found that cherry tomatoes work the best and hot peppers are even better: cherry bombs, cayennes. And peppers don't need as much water.

Planted one in the ground, one upside down (Anonymous)
As an experiment, I took two beefstake tomato plants, same size, etc. I planted one in the ground and the other in the topsy turvy. within 10 days I had a tomato and now after 3 weeks, I have 5 tomatoes - one is as big as a tennis ball. The one I planted in the ground has blossoms, but is nothing like the upside down one - the stem is THICK-that became apparent within the first week I planted it. It works! I went and got the chili pepper planter and planted 7 in it. I have no doubts I'll get a good yield!

I have used the same 2 that I purchased now for 3 seasons. I suppose it would be very heavy if you did not use a soil mix that is mixed in with a bag of vermiculite (they sell it right next to the soil), but if you mix them in 1/2 soil, 1/2 vermiculite, these are fantastic! I do not have the problem with the water running through, but Shultz makes a product (also sold with the soil) that you mix in with the soil, just a few tablespoons, and it absorbs and holds water which it then gives off during the day. I use it during the summer in my planters, as they sometimes dry out too quickly. I find doing adding a lighter soil is much easier than weeding, leaf mold, and staking! Hope the tips help.

Topsy Turvy Tomato Planter Upside Down (Anonymous)
I purchased two Topsy Turvy Tomato Planters and planted two tomato plants in each. After a month they are doing very well and getting flowers. Planting upside down is not easy. I thought this would work great since I have a 2 year old who will dig in a regular pot on the ground. It's kind of tricky to get the plants in the planter. And you will make a big mess. But they take up less space on my patio and are a great topic of interest for visitors. I'm very happy with them so far.

I have used the Topsy Turvy Tomato Planter for 3 seasons now, and will never, ever plant my tomatoes in the ground again. This product is sturdy, simple to use, and produces beautiful fruit. Because the plants grow toward the sun and never touch the ground, the slugs and other critters cannot ruin or run off with your produce. As I have already stated, I have used the same bags for 3 seasons now, and have not had any problems at all. I highly recommend this product.

disintegrates after 1 season (Anonymous)
The planters were easy to set up and the tomatoes grew well. Daily watering required after a certain point. When emptying the planters at season's end, one of the three planters simply shredded apart. The other two were developing small tears and clearly could last at best one more season. The plastic that these planters are made out of deteriorate in the sun and exposure to the elements.

I bought two topsy turvy planters. They arrived in just a couple of days. The are now planted with tomatoes and bell peppers. They are wonderful and easy to use.

I just ordered three more to try with cucumbers, zukes, and green beans. I recommend them to any one who wants and easy way to grow fresh vegetables

I bought two sets of these topsy turvy planters, and they're great. I planted a tomato on a pot but was not doing great at all, so I transfer to this upside down thing and WOW is working I cannot believe, the tomato plant is huge is growing by the minute, full of tiny tomtoes already. I use the other one for strawberries but it did not work as well as the tomato.

I purchased 3 of these for growing Tomato's, Green Peppers and Cucumbers and they all worked like a dream. Plants were healthy, full and produced alot of edible vegetables. I had assumed at the time i was researching this item that they dry out fast in the summer sun and that i would have to water constantly but that was not the case. I only watered once every other day. The chamber holds alot of moisture and because its plastic prevents alot of the evaporation. Only recommendation is find a sturdy spot for the hanger then leave it there until the season is over. My neighbor also bought a couple and moved them once they got to big breaking the stem of one tomato plant with was laddened with fruits. So allow at least 3-4ft of clearance under the planter for extensive growth then enjoy the resulting harvest!

Wonderful product! Only a few weeks in, and the tomato plant my family planted has grown strong and healthy. We still don't know how it will fare in the upcoming weeks, but all seems to be going well. This is a great conversation piece, perfect for a family garden.
